European Patent Office Notes Highest Increase in Patent Applications from China
The European Patent Office (EPO) on March 7 published its 2016 Annual Report revealing China showed the highest growth in patent applications. According to the report, the number of patent applications from China increased 24.8 percent in 2016. China's applications for the first time exceeded that of South Korea and ranked sixth out of the top 10 countries of origin. The top 10 countries were United States, Germany, Japan, France, Switzerland, China, the Netherlands, South Korea, Britain and Italy.
33 Projects Awarded at IP Cup Creative Design Contest
Thirty-three projects won awards on March 12 in the first Intellectual Property Cup creative design contest in Xiamen. Co-hosted by the Xiamen intellectual property office and the Xiamen Industrial Design Association, the event was launched in November 2016 and attracted more than 600 projects along with 30,000 online votes.
China Continues to Top Global Trademark Application
China filed 3.69 million trademark applications in 2016, up 28.4 percent over 2015, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) said on March 22. The number of valid trademarks registered in China was nearly 12.4 million by the end of 2016. China has led the world in terms of trademark filing for 15 years. The State Council, has set specific goals and tasks for the development of intellectual property during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020).
China Resolves 87,000 IPR Cases in 2011-2015
A total of 87,000 cases related to infringement of intellectual property rights (IPR) were cleaned up during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), according to the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO). The office also announced that 322,000 cases related to other business infringements, including confidentiality, counterfeiting, and trademark rights, were dealt with. Shen Changyu, head of the SIPO, said establishment of IPR protection centers will be accelerated this year to facilitate the handling of IPR cases.
147,000 IPR Cases in the First-instance Concluded in 2016
According to the statistics from the Supreme People's Court (SPC), courts in China concluded 147,000 IPR cases in the first instance in 2016. According to SPC, Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuhan and Chengdu have set up their own IPR adjudication divisions, which could handle cross-region IPR cases. As efforts to facilitate the innovation-driven innovation strategy and improve law system for IPR protection, SPC formulated new judicial interpretations for hearing patent disputes. Meanwhile, SPC has concluded several IPR cases with a social impact and gained extensive attention.
Top 50 Universities Having the Most Valid Invention Patents Released
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Development Center released the Top 50 Universities Having the Most Valid Invention Patents by the End of 2016, of which the top 5 universities are Tsinghua University (8,002), Zhejiang University (7,764), Harbin Institute of Technology (5,007), Southeast University (4,665) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (4,494). Beijing University (ranking 25th) with 1,888 valid patents falls behind the Dalian University of Technology (ranking 21st). The total number of the valid invention patents owned by the top 50 universities is 116,156 pieces.
