Xiaomi and Sisvel agree to license for cellular standard essential patents

2022/08/02

Xiaomi and Sisvel, on June 30, announced the companies have entered into a license agreement covering the standard-essential patents of Mitsubishi Electric and Sisvel in the field of mobile communication. This deal brings to an end the patent litigation dispute between the two companies.

Since 2019, Sisvel has initiated infringement lawsuits against Chinese mobile phone companies, including Xiaomi and OPPO, and it gradually spread from the UK to the Netherlands and Italy. Xiaomi and OPPO sued Sisvel and achieved a good result. In 2020, Xiaomi sued Sisvel in the Netherlands. The first-instance Court rejected Sisvel's interim injunction. After Sisvel appealed to the Hague Court of Appeal, the Court upheld the first-instance judgment. In addition, the Court also ruled that Xiaomi did not infringe Sisvel's wireless communication standard essential patents. In the UK, on April 26, 2021, the British High Court ruled that Xiaomi does not infringe Sisvel's patent. In China, Xiaomi invalidated six of Sisvel's patents and partially invalidated one patent.
